EAD K-12 announcements for Sept 6th, 2010

1. The Graduate School is now accepting electronic submissions of theses and dissertations via ProQuest. The site for electronic submissions went live on August 30th. Detailed formatting and submission information for preparing electronic documents is available from the Graduate School web site, http://grad.msu.edu/etd/

During Fall 2010, traditional submission of unbound printed documents will continue to be an option, but only electronic documents will be accepted after December 16, 2010.

THREE workshops this fall, 2 for Electronic Submissions and 1 final workshop for Hard Copy Submissions.

November 5th, 2010 for ELECTRONIC Submissions

Registration is REQUIRED. To register, send an email to: gradwrsp@msu.edu and include your name, department, email address, and the name of the workshop (Thesis/Dissertation Formatting – ELECTRONIC). Please bring your student ID for attendance.

2.Graduate certificate in Community Engagement-- ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING September 10, 2010, 1:00-3:00 p.m., in 6 Kellogg Center. Students (and advisors) are invited to learn more and bring questions for the UOE staff about the Certificate Program. See attached flyer.

First place AT&T Award recipient EAD 866 (Teaching in Post Secondary Education) is a keenly visual course that encourages online classmates to act as a “community of learners.” Students engage in active learning that culminates in teaching an online module of their own.

Join us as instructors Ann Austin and John Dirkx, and course environment creators Rhonda Egidio and Brandon Blinkenberg discuss the development of this course and how you can integrate some of their techniques into your online or blended offering.

4. Free workshop for Graduate Students to help you survive and thrive in graduate school. To allow for more interaction, the workshop is limited to 35 graduate students. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. Lunch is provided.

Learn effective negotiation and communication strategies to resolve conflicts and also to prevent them from occurring.

5.FREE Workshop for Doctoral Students!

Navigating the PhD
Workshop Series

These two interactive writing workshops, given at least once a semester, are designed to help you develop an individualized plan for graduate writing. The morning session is designed for doctoral student early in the PhD process. The afternoon session is designed for doctoral student later in the PhD process. Lunch will be provided at noon. Each workshop will be limited to 25 doctoral students.

9:00 AM - Noon Navigating the PhD: Managing Time and Academic Relationships
In this 3-hour workshop, plans for time management and working with others will be the main focus. Participants will create academic timelines for their PhD work at MSU and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of PhD students and share strategies for overcoming writer's block and procrastination. Additionally, discussion about selecting and working with committees will provide a space for sharing about and learning how to communicate with faculty members about participants' research and writing.

1 PM - 4 PM Navigating the PhD: Writing Processes & Strategies for Academic Writing
In this 3-hour workshop, the focus will be on writing processes and practices. The PhD programs at MSU require written comprehensive exams, dissertation proposals, and dissertations. In the workshop, participants will explore and share their current writing practices and be given practical writing and revision strategies. The latter half of the workshop will focus on developing a plan for approaching comprehensive exams or the dissertation (depending on the student's current needs). Such a plan will help students develop goals, ask questions, and address writing strengths and limitations to successfully complete their degrees.
