1. IRTL Session: An Introduction to MSU’s Human Research Protection Program (IRB)

On Monday, November 16th, representatives from MSU’s IRB (Institutional Review Boards) Office will join us in the College of Education to present on human subjects review, the application process, and regulations specific to education. This session is an introduction to human subjects review at MSU. It is open to all students, faculty, and staff, but will be specifically geared toward doctoral students and new faculty. The session is an interactive opportunity to learn more about the IRB process, and to ask questions specific to individual interests.

What’s Out There? Identifying Non-Academic Options in the Ph.D. Job Market

This workshop will discuss job search strategies for graduate students seeking employment in business, government, or non-profits. It will provide information about how to begin and organize the job search, what strategies are most effective, how to research organizations, and where to find other helpful resources.

This workshop is limited to 60 participants on a first come, first served basis.
2. Request for Proposals for 2010 Summer Research Fellowships
The Dean's Office in the College of Education again invites proposals for a summer research fellowship. The award is designed to intensify and accelerate the scholarly development of our students. Doctoral students in the college who are not yet at the dissertation stage are eligible to apply.
The awards will consist of a fellowship for $6000, which will be paid in April, 2010. The fellowships are designed to support students full-time, so recipients may not enroll in any courses, nor hold any other work assignments during the summer semester. The program will also provide $500 to the faculty mentor who agrees to oversee a student's project. At the end of summer, by approximately August 15, 2010, recipients will be expected to submit a brief letter to me that summarizes their accomplishments, with a copy of the letter to Dean Karen Klomparens of the Graduate School (her award letter will specify the exact date for your letter to her). Because the fellowship will be paid in April, recipients must be enrolled during the spring semester.
Each complete proposal will include:
1. A three-page (single-spaced) proposal that outlines the goals of the project. The summer fellowship may be used to collect data, to analyze and write-up previously collected research data, to complete an ongoing project, or to move it to the publication stage. The proposal should indicate where the research will be presented or published. References and essential brief supplementary matter can exceed the three page limit. Please list your faculty mentor's name on the line following your own name and PID at the beginning of the proposal.
2. An email statement to me from prospective faculty mentors agreeing to oversee the project. This is not a letter of recommendation; just a sentence agreeing to mentor the project.
The fellowships are intended to support students' original work, or, possibly, a piece of a larger project which is assigned exclusively to the student. It is not intended to support graduate research assistantship assignments. Selection will be based on the quality of the proposal, progress that is expected be made on the project during the summer fellowship period, and the student's academic record, with preference given to students in the early stage of their program (typically to those just finishing their second year, or possibly third year).
Proposals are to be submitted electronically as Word attachments (name the files in this fashion exactly: SRF10PropYourLastName.doc (for example: SRF10PropSmith.doc) to Michael Sedlak, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (firstname.lastname@example.org). Make certain that your full name and PID appear at the start of the proposal; no separate title pages; everything must be in Verdana 10 point font; must have page numbers in the footer.
Proposals must be received no later that December 11, 2009.

3.Social Network Analysis Workshop from CStat
Many quantitative analyses in kinesiology are applied to data regarding characteristics of people but not to data describing interactions among people. But interactions play an important role in affecting behavior and beliefs that cannot be explained purely in terms of individual attributes or organizational context. To address these issues, participants will be introduced to the basic concepts and models of social network analysis. Participants will then have opportunities to explore how to define and apply these models in their own settings. The focus is on theoretical model development which can inform the design of studies, measures, and analysis. The focus is not on software, although there will be some exposure, and participants will be introduced to a range of social network resources. Participants should have roughly one year of applied statistics so that they are extremely comfortable with the general linear model (regression and ANOVA) and analysis of 2x2 tables.

4. Using Logics Models to Represent Program Theories
The Community Evaluation and Research Center (CERC) at Michigan State University is pleased to announce The Evaluation Circle, a series of workshops on evaluation theory and practice for the MSU and broader Michigan community. These workshops are designed to cover evaluation topics that are often not addressed in the typical graduate curriculum. The workshops are free and open to all members of the MSU community.

Program theories refer to the assumptions held by program managers and staff regarding how program resources and activities operate to produce intended program effects. Logic models are graphical representations of program theories and are useful tools in helping uncover underlying assumptions about program logic. They also serve as a framework for identifying major evaluation questions and key process and outcome measures. This session will focus on how to work with program stakeholders to explicate underlying program theories using logic models.

5. Educause 2009 Virtual Conference
November 4, 5 and 6, Libraries Computing and Technology and the College of Art and Letters will be hosting a live EDUCAUSE 2009 Virtual Conference in 120 Linton Hall. We have registered for this location and have selected the presentations that will be shown, primarily focusing on topics interesting to those interested in educational technology.
This online viewing and collaborative experience will give us an opportunity to network locally with colleagues who share similar interests, while
receiving a live broadcast from presenters at the national EDUCAUSE event in Denver. Local activities and discussion will be moderated by staff from
