Title: Facilitating Discussions That Work

Description: Discussions “work” when we facilitate well through questioning. Careful planning, clear goal setting, and adept facilitation can turn a hum-drum recitation into an authentic learning experience, transform “tennis-ball” exchanges into Socratic explorations, and foster our students’ further inquiry and interest. But becoming an artful, provocative, and productive questioner is difficult. Fortunately, it’s also a teaching competency that we can improve right away. Workshop attendees will work through some of their most pressing disciplinary questions, transforming them into means for spurring students’ increased participation. They’ll also leave with guidelines for employing sophisticated questioning techniques and useful recommendations for designing and facilitating group work. Overcoming Apathy and Creating Excitement in the Classroom

What can instructors do to facilitate learning when they encounter students who seem uninterested and even apathetic toward course content and assignments? Part of the responsibility for learning belongs to students, but as faculty, we can find new ways to motivate, inspire, and maybe even cajole students to learn. Through a review of theories of learning and motivation, participants will examine strategies that increase student engagement in course content and class sessions. As a result of attending this seminar, participants will be able to demonstrate and explain how they can make classroom learning a more meaningful experience for students.

Teaching large classes comes with many challenges: dealing with classroom disruptions, grading mountains of material, responding to students in a reasonable amount of time, decisions regarding how and when to use course capture, and keeping students engaged with active learning. Many of the same challenges emerge when class size increases, even if there are not hundreds of students enrolled in the course. In this seminar, participants will both explore strategies for teaching large groups of students and examine the research literature supporting these strategies.

This session will explore the experiences of African/African American/Black students at MSU in order to create affirming and inclusive classroom environments. Participants will examine: (1) the various subgroups that comprise the African/African American/Black student population, (2) the ways students might identify or be offended by different labels, (3) the background experiences students have that can affect student interactions with faculty and student learning, and (4) ways to promote full participation by African/African American/Black students in the classroom. The session will begin with remarks by Dr. Dagbovie, followed by comments by a panel of students and conclude with a Q and A. Graduate and Professional students interested in advocating for more graduate assistance from the federal government should consider attending the SAGE Conference (Student Advocates for Graduate Education) in Washington D.C. March 25th-30th, 2011. SAGE is a national organization dedicated to advocating on behalf of graduate and professional student issues. Students chosen to attend on behalf of Michigan State University (MSU) will have the opportunity to learn how to advocate for graduate education, work with other graduate and professional students, and meet on Capitol Hill with Michigan Senators and Congressmen. Call for Applications for the IIT fellowship program, 2011-2012 is also posted on the IIT website at http://grad.msu.edu/iit/programs.aspx

The primary goal of the IIT Fellowship Program is to broaden and enrich the professional development experience of a diverse group of graduate students by placing them within an environment, James Madison College, with an established tradition in excellence in undergraduate teaching. Students selected for this full-year program will work closely with faculty at James Madison to engage in structured discussions on pedagogy and practice and on course design and curriculum development. Fellows will be mentored in reflecting on their own teaching experiences in a systematic way in light of these discussions. In addition, fellows will have an opportunity to work with core faculty to investigate questions concerning the intellectual coherence and viability of interdisciplinary research and teaching. In this latter work, they will have opportunities for general interactions with undergraduates.

It will also examine the way that academic work-places are structured and how this frequently contributes to productivity-related problems. Planning, Managing, and Funding the Research Project
Saturday, March 26, 2010 – Room Big Ten B, Kellogg Center

Planning, writing, and getting funding for a research idea as a doctoral student, new postdoc or new faculty member can be a daunting task. How do you manage a research project from proposal to completion, and how does the process vary by discipline? This workshop will focus on how to break down the various components and tasks of a research project, identify strategies for organization and project management, and understand the process of identifying and securing funding. Participants will develop their own project plan throughout the course of the workshop, assisted by presentations and working sessions with faculty familiar with the process as both researchers and agency grant reviewers, as well as with experts on grants databases. Information will be applicable to a range of research projects (a specific grant, a publication, a thesis or dissertation). Participants should bring either an idea for a project they would like to do or the outline of a project already in progress.
In the morning plenary, faculty will share their experience with managing a research project, including “packaging” the research proposal to meet requirements of funding sources, the components of a budget, supervising and evaluating teams, and creating the project report. Participants will then work throughout the day to learn how to approach their work through the lens of project management; a specialist in project management will help them apply general techniques to the stages of their specific research project. The afternoon breakout sessions will address two key topics for funding: using grants databases to find grants and fellowships in various disciplinary areas, and developing a budget for submission to Contracts and Grants. If possible, please bring a laptop computer for the session on using databases.
Participants will leave the workshop with a blueprint for managing their own project and concrete steps for securing funding.
