2. 2011-2012 Fulbright Fellowship Opportunities
The MSU Office of International Studies and Programs cordially invites faculty, graduate students and students graduating in 2011 to attend a Fulbright Scholarship Program Informational Workshop according to the following schedule: MSU STUDENTS GRADUATING IN 2011 WORKSHOP on Thursday, April 1, 2010, Room 303 International Center from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

MSU FACULTY AND PROFESSIONALS SCHOLARS’ WORKSHOP on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, Room 303-305 International Center from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
In these workshops participants will be informed about the objectives, requirements, and deadlines for each program as well as how to: 1) develop a more competitive application, 2) select a host country, 3) make necessary host country contacts, and 4) solicit winning letters of recommendation. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
Fulbright fellowships are prestigious, career-enhancing awards that confer special status on winners during and following their foreign study. They become outstanding, officially recognized representatives of the United States. Grants are provided to students, faculty, and professionals who undertake graduate study, advanced research, or teaching at the elementary, secondary, or university level in more than 140 countries. Most grantees choose their own programs. Projects may include university course work, independent library or field research, classes in an academic institution, a music conservatory, art school, or on special projects in the social or life sciences. The grants pay for air travel, a monthly living stipend, health and accident insurance and in some cases for tuition waivers and/or a research allowance.

3. Workshop -Taking Charge: Strategies for Success in Academia
Free Workshop from The Graduate School presented by Dr. Greg Lambeth from the University of Illinois
For graduate students, postdocs and new faculty interested in developing strategies to become more effective in managing multiple projects.
This workshop will evaluate some of the most typical issues affecting productivity, including procrastination, motivation and perfectionism. It will also examine the way that academic workplaces are structured and how this frequently contributes to productivity-related problems. The hands-on workshop will offer several exercises related to goal-setting, time management and accountability to assist participants in developing practical strategies for meeting their goals.

4. The Center for the Scholarship of Teaching is pleased to announce the annual competition for the Marianne Amarel Fellowship for the Scholarship of Teaching and Teacher Education.
The fellowship is intended to help the awardee establish - and pursue -- a line of inquiry concerning the scholarship of teaching and learning in K-12, teacher education, or higher education. The awardee can choose to study his/her own teaching or that of other teachers and their students. The fellowship is a one year fellowship (although recipients can apply for a renewal) and provides the grantee with a 25% research assistantship to complement another assistantship and up to $500 in travel per year.
What is a scholarship of teaching and learning?
There has been a growing interest, both in K-12 education and in higher education, for scholarship that informs teaching and learning in schools, colleges and universities. Starting with Ernest Boyer's report,
many universities and professional associations have initiated conversations about how work on teaching could be a focus of one's scholarship and lead to, as the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching argues:
significant, long-lasting learning for all students
advances in the practice and profession of teaching, and
bringing to teaching the recognition afforded to other forms of scholarly work
Who was Marianne Amarel?
Marianne Amarel was an educator and scholar who advocated the teacher's role in the creation of knowledge and the construction of curriculum. She was an officer of the American Educational Research Association, a member of the national advisory board of the Institute for Research on Teaching here at MSU. She participated in the creation of the Holmes Group, serving as liaison to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Her papers are archived at MSU. The Marianne Amarel Memorial Lecture series was established in 1989 by Michigan State University, the Holmes Group, and family, friends, and colleagues of Marianne Amarel.
How to apply
Active doctoral students currently enrolled in any doctoral program in the College of Education at Michigan State University are invited to apply. The application deadline is 9 April 2010. Applicants should submit a personal statement providing information on the development of their interests in a scholarship of teaching and for learning (maximum 2500 words); a research plan for one year of study (maximum length 2500 words); a current resume; two letters of recommendation from University faculty; and one writing sample (this can be a conference paper, a course paper, a published chapter/article, etc.).
