K-12 Announcements for February 19th, 2010
Here are quite a few announcements this week:

The Graduate School has extended the registration for the online support groups!
the Graduate School , in collaboration with the University Counseling Center and the Department of Communication, is pleased to offer an exciting addition to our dissertation support group program. Beginning February 22, 2010 we will be piloting a series of internet-chat-room-based doctoral support groups. These groups will follow the same format as the doctoral support groups that are currently offered on campus. (See the group description below for further details.)

These online groups are being offered as part of a research study being conducted by the Counseling Center, the Graduate School and the Communications Department. Participation in the research is strictly optional and is not required for participation in the group. As an incentive for participating in the groups and the associated research, your name will be entered into a raffle for a $50 gift certificate each time you complete a research survey.

The Council of Graduate Students (COGS) is proud to present the second annual conference for graduate/professional students at Michigan State University. We welcome submissions of completed or ongoing research projects for both poster and short oral presentation formats. Students are highly encouraged to present research projects that have been accepted for or presented at regional and national conferences. COGS will award $4000 in prizes. Improving Student Engagement at the Secondary Level through Personalizing Learning

In its efforts to improve student achievement in Michigan, the Office for K-12 Outreach has looked beyond our borders at school reform efforts in other countries. England’s reforms include Every Child Matters, analogous to No Child Left Behind, and the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT), an independent, not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to raising levels of achievement in secondary education.
One of the intriguing ideas at work in England is the concept of personalizing learning. Professor David Hargreaves argues that the past hundred years can be characterized by mass production, both in industry and in education. By contrast, the next hundred years will be characterized by mass customization – adapting a product (in industry) or service (in education) to meet the needs and interests of the individual.
Personalizing learning can be viewed as redesigning schooling so it is clearly characterized by 21st century mass customization models of service delivery rather than 20th century models of mass production. Hargreaves and 250 school leaders in England’s high school reform movement have defined personalizing learning as “meeting more educational needs of more students more fully than before.”
Please join SSAT’s Kai Vacher and Emma Sims for a conversation about personalizing learning. Vacher and Sims will explain what it means to redesign schooling so that students are more effectively involved in the education process, why this is central to personalizing learning, and how schools are leading innovative practice in this key area of 21st century schooling.

The Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Teaching Fellowship Program

(IIT) is a partnership between the Michigan State University Graduate School and James Madison Residential College of Public Affairs at Michigan State University.
The primary goal of the IIT Fellowship Program is to broaden and enrich the professional development experience of a diverse group of graduate students by placing them within an environment, James Madison College, with an established tradition in excellence in undergraduate teaching. Selected fellows work closely with a core group of Madison faculty to engage in structured discussions on pedagogy and practice, on interdisciplinary course design and curriculum development, and on general interaction with undergraduates. They also work with core faculty to investigate theoretical and practical applications of interdisciplinary inquiry and research.

Position Announcement
IES-Funded Postdoctoral Training Program in Mathematics Education Research
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

The College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a postdoctoral fellow to participate in a new mathematics education research-training program, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), U.S. Department of Education. The three-year position offers collaborative and independent research opportunities. The program will prepare fellows to address questions relevant to mathematics instruction and policy in a methodologically rigorous manner, and to serve as leaders in improving U.S. mathematics teaching and learning for diverse populations.

Specific research projects will be based upon the joint interests of the fellow and the UIUC faculty mentor(s). Three core faculty members will serve as program mentors: Dr. Sarah Theule Lubienski (mathematics achievement, equity, and reform; expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methods, including multi-level modeling of classroom and large-scale data), Dr. Arthur J. Baroody (non-experimental and experimental studies on the teaching and learning of basic number, counting, and arithmetic, with a particular focus on young children or those with learning difficulties), and Dr. Joseph P. Robinson (effects of policies and practices on the academic outcomes of English learners; expert in quasi-experimental research methods). We welcome applicants from the disciplines of education, related social sciences (economics, psychology, sociology), mathematics, statistics, or other suitable fields. The ideal applicant will have expertise in mathematics education or rigorous research methodologies (e.g., experimental or quasi-experimental design), with the objective of gaining substantial knowledge in the other domain. Desirable attributes also include strong analytic skills, experience with statistical software and large-scale datasets, and an interest in improving education for traditionally under-served students.

The position begins August 16, 2010. Applicants must possess their doctoral degree before that date. All qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents will be considered. Salary is set by IES at $50,000 annually plus $10,500 in benefits. Additionally, each fellow will receive $7,000 annually for research expenses and $2,500-$5,000 annually for conference and other travel.

University of Virginia Post-doctoral Interdisciplinary Training Program in the Education Sciences

The UVA Curry School of Education received an award from the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences to hire two post-doctoral trainees as part of the Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in the Education Sciences beginning July 2010.

Trainees hired in 2010 will become part of a network of post-doctoral trainees at the Curry School of Education in research centers including the Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning, the Curry School Center for Positive Youth Development, the University of Virginia Center on Education Policy and Workforce Competitiveness, and research initiatives on effective teaching in higher education and STEM education, as well as trainees supported by independent grants.
Fellows' training includes two main components: strong mentoring with a senior investigator focused on the demanding and technical aspects of producing high quality scholarship (theory, design, use of rigorous methods, writing, etc.) and immersion in an intellectually challenging and scientifically rigorous community of scholarship. Fellows will build a research program by formulating research questions, generating research designs, writing grants, conducting analyses, writing and presenting findings. Experiences will include intense mentorship with a senior investigator; engagement in work-in-progress meetings with faculty, other post-docs and students; involvement in specialized training institutes; structured self-evaluation; conversation with other UVa faculty; and involvement in a speaker series, among other opportunities.

Two Fellowship positions are available beginning 7/1/2010, working with either Sara Rimm-Kaufman or Bob Pianta as a primary mentor - please see below for more information about their research projects.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a track record of publication in education or social sciences, evidence of potential for obtaining external funding, substantive knowledge and background in the field of education, and demonstrated leadership, management, and communication skills.

Carnegie Mellon University and the RAND Corporation invite applicants for two-year postdoctoral positions in education research, starting in Fall 2010. The Carnegie Mellon and RAND Traineeships (CMART) in Methodology and Interdisciplinary Research is an interdisciplinary, inter-institutional postdoctoral training program funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), U.S. Department of Education, to launch PhD level researchers on successful careers in education research.

CMART focuses on practical statistical, quantitative and methodological training needed for scientifically rigorous education research. CMART postdoctoral fellows will have opportunities to work on one or more interdisciplinary projects led by researchers affiliated with Carnegie Mellon, RAND, or the NSF-funded Pittsburgh Science of Learning Center (PSLC), as well as their own research. Relevant projects include: development of an online tutoring system for middle school math; randomized controlled trials evaluating instructional coaching, online geometry or reading tutors, and other interventions; study of the consequences of broad reform in large urban school districts; educational data mining for online tutors; and value-added and related evaluation of teacher performance Inquiries about additional projects/opportunities are also welcome.

In addition, CMART fellows will participate in a rich array of seminars, brown-bags, and visiting speaker series offered by RAND, PSLC, Carnegie Mellon's IES-funded predoctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Education Research (PIER), CMART itself, and affiliated departments. Fellows will receive guidance through a two-tiered mentoring system designed to help with both narrow and broader challenges of building an education research career; and additional training through courses and workshops offered at Carnegie Mellon and in the larger Pittsburgh research community.

CMART is aimed at both new PhD's whose specialty is education research (e.g. educational psychologists, cognitive scientists, curriculum specialists, education policy specialists, etc.), who are interested in augmenting their quantitative training while working on significant education research projects; and new PhD's whose specialty is statistics, machine learning, economics, or another quantitative field, interested in immersing themselves in education research. More senior candidates are also welcome to apply.

The fellowship carries a stipend of $50,000/yr, full-time benefits including health insurance, and funds for professional travel and startup costs (computer, software, books, etc.). Opportunities exist to augment the fellowship stipend through other sources (teaching, additional research projects, etc.), subject to approval by the CMART management committee.
